Several Bend Pops Orchestra musicians gave a musical presentation to an enthusiastic group of elementary school students Wednesday, April 22 at Silver Rail Elementary School in Redmond, Or. Musicians presented a program of music and musical education to the 5th grade class, whose students are heading for middle schools with music programs next year. School staff wanted the children to have an idea of what they might like to pursue in the coming school year.
Our musicians represented all families of orchestral instruments: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. We played an introductory piece to set the mood, then each musician spoke to the students to explain the instrument they play, how it works, its role in the orchestra and music, and then demonstrated playing the instrument. We finished with a question and answer period.
Students were very excited and had several requests for our musicians. The program was very well received.
